Sade just gave birth, Franca exclaimed.
Wow, congrats to her. What did she have this time?
Another girl o. Hmmm, I wish she had a boy, especially after 3 girls. At least, to ensure her stay in her husband’s house.
This conversation is typical of what goes on in many homes after a woman delivers in many African countries, including Nigeria.
Some tribes go on to imply to the woman that her duty as a wife is to give the man a heir (son) and her position as a wife isn’t secure until she has a male child.
This puts the woman under some pressure to pray and fast so that God gives her a male child.
We have heard creepy stories of women exchanging babies, or patronising baby factories just so they can give a heir.
Let’s get one thing straight. A woman cannot determine the sex of her baby.
It’s the man.
He has the X and Y chromosomes while the woman has the X chromosome. And so the mentality that some people say “the woman has only girls in her womb” is simply absurd. Stupid. So they suggest to the man to have an extramarital affair just so he can have a male child.
but hey, check this out.
I did one of those random tests on Facebook and here’s what Me junior looks like. Hahaha. Isn’t she adorable?
I have one cute girl waiting down the line. Awwwww. So pretty. I can just imagine the matching clothes, fancy hair, etc. Don’t let me dream now.
On a more serious note, what’s all the fuss about a male child? Why do folks have a preference for male babies? Why is it “a bouncing baby boy” and everyone cheers and gives the father a high five? Here are some likely reasons, I think.
So he can take care of his aged parents.
Research has shown that women have more tendency to take care of their aged parents and make provisions for them. The nurturing instinct of a woman won’t just be for her children. With adulthood, the daughter becomes the mom and begins to worry about the well-being of grandma and grandpa.Girls are better care-givers. So he can carry on the name of the father.
Don’t girls do the same?
Especially when a woman is influential and successful, everyone knows where she’s from and her father’s name will be remembered. The fact that she changes her name doesn’t mean she stops being part of the family. Don’t throw us out, please.
So he can have inheritance.
This is the 21st century, people. Land is land everywhere. Please, if the elders and villagers won’t share land for the girls, we can buy land and landed properties in choice places. Besides, i think tradition and culture should be reviewed to include the girl child.
Girls matter.A child is a child regardless of the sex and should have all the rights as is given to the other. No one should be treated less than is fair. Click To Tweet
In some cultures, girls are denied proper education since they are seen to be “wasted investments”. This is so wrong.
A girl is a precious gift of beauty and love.
Let’s cherish our girls.
Happy International Day of the Girl Child.
